This one-day course is designed to provide dental professionals and students with a comprehensive understanding and hands-on experience in rubber dam placement. The course combines a strong theoretical foundation with supervised practical training, ensuring participants gain confidence in applying rubber dams effectively in clinical settings.

Module 1: The Role of Rubber Dams in Modern Dentistry

  • Brief history and evolution
  • Benefits in restorative, endodontic, and paediatric dentistry
  • Infection control and patient safety


Module 2: Equipment & Materials

  • Overview of armamentarium
  • Rubber dam sheets (latex / non-latex)
  • Clamps (winged vs wingless)
  • Frames, forceps, punches, lubricants, floss


Module 3: Step-by-Step Application Technique

  • Tooth selection and site assessment
  • Punching and positioning the dam
  • Clamp selection and placement
  • Frame positioning; single vs multiple tooth isolation
  • Saliva control and suction
  • Floss ligatures and wedges


Module 4: Troubleshooting & Patient Management

  • Managing anxious or gagging patients
  • Handling clamp dislodgement
  • Preventing tissue trauma
  • Communication tips and patient education


Module 5: Clinical Indications & Real-World Scenarios

  • When not to use a rubber dam
  • Bridgework, broken teeth, tight contacts
  • Use in endodontics and adhesive procedures

13:15 – 16:30 | Practical Hands-On Workshop (3–3.25 hours)

Led by experienced clinicians. Small-group rotations with direct feedback.


Practical Station 1: Instrument Familiarisation
  • Assembling a rubber dam kit
  • Clamp selection by tooth type
  • Practice: dam punching and preparation


Practical Station 2: Mannequin-Based Practice

  • Step-by-step placement on typodonts
  • Posterior molar isolation (upper & lower)
  • Anterior isolation for aesthetic cases
  • Winged and wingless techniques
  • Inversion of the rubber dam


Instructor Walk-Around

  • 1:1 feedback and technique refinement
  • Ergonomics and visibility
  • Tips for speed and efficiency
